Main application
Acetanilide is the raw material of sulfonamides, which can be used as analgesic, antipyretic and preservative. It is used to manufacture dye intermediates p-nitroacetanilide, p-nitroaniline and p-phenylenediamine. During the Second World War, it was widely used to manufacture acetaminophen sulfonyl chloride. Acetanilide is also used to make thioacetamide. In industry, it can be used as rubber vulcanization accelerator, stabilizer of fiber fat coating, stabilizer of hydrogen peroxide, and for synthesizing camphor. It is also used as a culture medium for penicillin G production. As an analgesic and antipyretic of the previous generation, it has been replaced by a new generation of acetyl drugs because of its low toxicity.
