Sodium methoxide is an extremely hazardous chemical that is both corrosive and prone to spontaneous combustion. It is mainly used in pharmaceutical industry, as condensation agent or chemical reagent in organic synthesis, catalyst for edible oil treatment, etc. Sodium methoxide has extensive applications, mainly used in the production of sulfonamides. Sodium methoxide is also a catalyst for organic synthesis, which is used in pesticide production and oil processing industry.

It is sensitive to air and moisture, decomposition in water, soluble in ethanol and methanol, decomposed into methanol and sodium hydroxide when it meets water, and decomposed in air above 126.6℃. It can also exist as solution compounds when in commodity forms. Solvent compounds, on the other hand, can also be found. It is mainly used as condensation agent; used in the production of vitamin B1 and A as a strong alkaline catalyst and methoxylating agent; sulfadiazine and other drugs, a small amount used in pesticide production. It is also used as a catalyst for treating edible fat and edible oil (especially lard). It is also used as analytical reagent.
